Near Miss

20070628cropI’ve been taking it easy for a while now so I thought it was time to do some LT intervals. I wanted to do 2×20’s so I headed west towards Middleton. I started an interval heading westbound on State St (Hwy 44). It felt hard, but I wasn’t sure if that was because I was still over-trained, or due to loss of fitness from backing off so much. I was only shooting for 290 watts when a couple months ago 310 was not a problem. But today, 290 felt pretty hard and it got harder as the interval progressed.

As I was approaching Emmett Rd, a semi gravel trailer was headed towards me. I still had a couple minutes left on my interval so I wanted to make a right and continue it on Emmett Rd. I couldn’t tell if the semi had a turn signal on, but since he was moving towards the center turn lane I deduced he was in fact, turning in front of me! So I had to slam on my brakes and let him make is wide turn while I let him by. Then I got on his bumper and took note of his license plate then called 911 and reported him. Good thing I was turning right…if I had gone straight, I’d probably would have been squashed like a bug! After the adrenaline subsided, my legs felt thrashed and I decided to bag the second interval. I think more rest is needed.
