90/90/90 Workout

20071124cropI did another variety ride today, this time with some Level 6 work. I was trying out Andy’s 90/90/90 workout he mentioned years ago on the Wattage list. The idea is that you’re doing about 90% of your best 20-minute, 5-minute and 30-second MMPs (mean maximal powers).

The 30-second intervals were the hardest, especially since they came at the end. I tried the first and third one with a sprint-then-fade pacing strategy, whereas I tried to keep the wattage steady on the second and fourth ones. Well, the former makes for a much higher average power, the latter was less painful. Such is life…there’s always trade-offs! It seemed that doing those on rollers also made them more difficult. I’ll have to try them on the trainer sometime. Either way, this was one tough little workout!
